Spotlight on Career Services

If you're a regular visitor to this blog, you've heard me sing the praises of Wabash's Schroeder Office of Career Services, headed by Scott Crawford and his able staff. They have led a tremendous culture change on campus over the past two years. This spring, of those students wanting to find employment after Wabash, only 17% have yet to find a job. The average starting salary for the Class of 2007 is nearly $44,000. The list of businesses where our young lads have found jobs and internships is impressive.

The Career Center folks cite alumni involvement and networking as an important part of their initiatives. To assist SOCS, you can become an Alumni Mentor. Serving as an alumni mentor, you allow students to contact you for advice and career counseling, but you can control the topics and frequency of your involvement. Please visit the SOCS website to learn more: http://www.wabash.edu/careers/alumni/mentor

LSAT Boot Camp Update

Earlier, I reported on the NAWM's efforts in better preparing our would-be Wabash lawyers for the LSAT. Here's what we've heard from their intial efforts:

After classes ended and finals were complete, a group of approximately 35 students stayed on campus to take part in the LSAT Boot Camp. This three-day prep session was the first for students wishing to take the LSAT test. While we are collecting quantitative results of the Boot Camp’s effectiveness, early responses from students are very positive! The LSAT Boot Camp could serve as the model for future preparatory programs for other graduate programs and post-graduate vocations for students.

Tommies Aftermath

Our own Chris Cotton submitted a comment about the devastating fire at Tommies (including a retort by his PB John Lustina). I'm sorry to say that the entire site of blog.com was down yesterday afternoon, which no doubt prevented some of you from adding your memories. Feel free to add your comments by clicking on THIS LINK.

Just as an update, speculation has been swirling that the blaze was caused by a meth lab, but that has not been confirmed. One, as yet identified, body was found in the rubble, reports the Lafayette Courier-Journal.

Hey, we here at the Official Class of '91 Blog are getting pretty good with this technology thang. Here is some video of last night's fire, from the Crawfordsville Journal Review

Fire Razes Tommies

(Photo by Tom Runge, Wabash College)

The Silver Dollar, a.k.a. Tommies, a.k.a. Tommy’s, was destroyed this morning as the entire building on the northwest corner of Pike Street and US 231 went up in flames at about 3:30 a.m. Early reports are that no one was hurt (apartments occupied the upper floors), but I am hearing that one person is unaccounted for at this time.

True to form, the Wabash Public Affairs Department has the best information on the fire from Jim Amidon’s story to Tom Runge’s blog. You can also catch updates from Indianapolis TV stations WTHR (story, video) and WISH (story, video).

The sketchy but popular C’ville watering hole inevitably holds many memories for us as we worked hard and played hard in our years at Wabash. I remember (barely) how most of us ended up there after completing our Comps in the January of our senior year. I’m sure many of us can also remember when the bar was just on the one side when we snuck in through the back door behind of-age upperclassmen.

About a year ago, in preparation for our Reunion, I posted a Memory Jog about Tommies.

What memories do you have (or can you remember) about Tommies?

Share them here (or the Comments link below).

Next time you crack open a beer, spill a little for dear, departed Tommies.
