Update: John Martin

I just received an e-mail from John Martin, who writes:

Thanks for the recent newsletter and the new website. Being in Texas, I won't make it to the 15th Year Reunion, except in spirit.

Things here are going well. We've enjoyed living in Austin, gotten used to the heat, and have also made some terrific new friends. My wife, Susan, is further pursuing her career in public health, and I have just completed my first year as coordinator of Business German at the University of Texas. We've very much enjoyed the Texas Hill Country and may move out into the county next year (Susan would really like to raise goats). My book went into its second printing, and I have two more in the works. Right now, the big projects are finishing the article for the Baylor Journal of Theater and Performance and the book review for the Journal of English and Germanic Philology.

Big Bash: A Quick Guide

Registration is now closed. If you missed the countless reminders, you'll have to throw yourself on the mercy of the good folks of the Hays Alumni Center. We've provided some quick links for the weekend.

The College is really rolling out the "Scarlet Carpet" for all of the reunion classes, so we expect to have a great weekend to reminisce and reconnect. It will also serve as the last farewell to President Andy Ford before he and his wife, Anne, depart for Rich Calacci's hometown of Wheaton, Illinois.

Memory Jog #2: Work Hard, Play Hard

Pop quiz, hotshot. Our next test of your fuzzy memories concerns life inside and outside the classroom. (A reminder: Just because I ask the questions doesn't mean that I know the answers!)

  1. Name three bands that played at Pan-Hel.
  2. Which discipline boasted the most majors from our class? How many guys from that major received “High Pass” on comps?
  3. What derogatory sign appeared on the press box during the Homecoming game against Franklin College our junior year?
  4. What two beers on tap made it a “Super Percolator”?
  5. Name the professor from the nickname: Yahweh, The Sandman, The Smiling Assassin (Can you think of any more?)
  6. What was the name of the group that our class convened to combat a rule made by the Wettack administration? What was the rule trying to do? Were we successful?
  7. Which now-tenured professors started teaching while we were in school?
  8. Which of our classmates had a regular column in the Bachelor? What were the names of their columns?
  9. Name two members of our class who graduated a year early?
  10. True or False: We threw our caps up in the air at graduation.
Don't forget to sign up for the Big Bash Reunion, June 2-4, 2006.
